Canadian Commission for UNESCO

Essay

This publication is about the critical importance of oceans and asks: to what extent do we, as Canadians, recognize the ocean as the determining life system of the planet?

Our concept aimed to evoke the many states of the sea—calm, rough, or somewhere in between—and the life within. We used striking watercolour imagery and textures to do this.

This essay was produced in partnership with the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition and brings together the perspectives of Indigenous elders, science-policy practitioners and the ocean literacy community. The full publication can be read here.
